Grammar & Writing Level 3
Course Description:
The focus of the writing portion of this course is on the
development of well-organized formal paragraphs. The grammar focus is on the
varied uses of modals, the perfect tenses, articles, adverb and adjective
subordinate clauses, and the strengthening of students’ abilities to use other
structures. Course emphasis is on practice of these structures orally and in
writing.
Course Objectives
After completing this course, the student will be able to:
◊ the following verb tenses:

simple and progressive

past
simple
-
simple
future: “be going to” and “will”

perfect and present perfect continuous

past
perfect and past perfect continuous
◊ modals expressing advice,
necessity, possibility, aking requests
◊ definite and indefinite articles
◊ adverb clauses of time and reason
◊ adjective clauses
◊ organize ideas with a
well-constructed topic sentence, body with signal words, and conclusion in
order to compose the following types of paragraphs:
- a descriptive paragraph
- a how-to paragraph in chronological order
- an expository paragraph with logical reasons and/or
examples
- an opinion paragraph
◊ use grammar that reflects
knowledge of verb tenses, adjective clauses, and modals.
◊ use a variety of sentence
structures, including both compound and complex sentences.
◊ revise paragraphs for content,
organization, language use, and mechanics.
◊ evaluate their writing progress
through at least two journals or informal letters addressed to the instructor.

Writing 40%
Final Grammar Test 10%
Final Writing Test 10%
Homework and Active Participation 10%
Total 100%
NOTE: The Grammar
Final will be on Wednesday of Week 10.

A+= 98 -100%
A = 93 - 97% C-
= 70 – 72%
A- = 90 - 92% D+= 68 – 69%
B+= 88 - 89% D = 63 - 67%
B = 83 - 87% D-
= 60 – 62 %
B- = 80 - 82% F = 59% and below
C+= 78 - 79%
C = 73 - 77%
NOTE: You must pass BOTH the
grammar and writing
with a 73% or above in order to pass
this class.
